5本

慶事に適した水引は基本的に奇数本使用され、その中でも「5本」が一般的な水引の本数になっています。

5 strings

Basically, when we tie Mizuhiki for the celebrations, the number of Mizuhiki should be an odd number; among them, 5  is the general number to be used.

 7本

通常よりも丁寧にお祝いをしたいとき、水引を「7本」使うことがあります。一般的に5本か7本かを選ぶ基準は、中身の「金額」によって決めることが多いです。一般的に、5本は3,000円から5,000円、7本は5,000円より多いときといわれています。

7 Strings

When you want to celebrate more politely than usual, you may use  7  strings of Mizuhiki. Generally, the criteria for choosing 5 or 7 strings  is often based on the amount you give. Generally, it is said that 5 strings may be used when you give 3000yen to 5000yen. 7 strings may be used when you give more than 5000 yen.

10本

慶事では、「奇数」の本数を使うのが基本になりますが、結婚式の水引の本数だけ10本を使います。その答えは、水引の基本の本数である5本を二重に結んだときの本数だからです。なぜ二重かというと、結婚をすることで2組の家族が手を取り合って縁を結ぶことを表しており、水引の本数も指の本数（5本）の2倍である10本になるといわれています。

10 strings

For celebrations, basically the number of mizuhiki should be odd number. Especially, only for the wedding we may use 10 strings(mizuhiki). That is because 10 strings are the double number of the basic number of Mizuhiki, five. The reason of double is that marriage represents that two families to help each other hand in hand. The number of mizuhiki also represents of the double number of fingers, 10.

弔事に適した水引は基本「4本」です。慶事の基本的な水引の本数が「奇数」だったのに対して弔事の数は、反対の「偶数」になります。どの香典袋にしたらいいのか迷ってしまった場合は、4本の水引を使いましょう。

4 strings

Basically, 4 strings(mizuhiki) is useed for the memorial services. The basic number of Mizuhiki for the celebrations is odd, while that is for memorial services is even. If you are wondering which number of mizuhiki for memorial services such as using for the incense, 4 strings is recommended.

2本

弔事の基本的な本数は4本ですが、それよりも簡易にしたい場合などには「2本」の水引を使うこともあります。

2 strings

The basic number for the memorial services is 4 , but you may use  2  strings(Mizuhiki).

6本

最後に、とくに気持ちを込めたい場合の「6本」です。6本は、大変お世話になった方・手厚い気持ちを表したい方などに対して使用します。

6 strings

6 strings are used for those who have been taken a great care and  want to express your great appreciations.

ちなみに、「3本」の水引は、粗品などに使われます。「9本」は「苦」につながることから、使われません。

By the way, 9  is not used because it implies  “suffering".

We call 9 Ku, represents 苦（Ku）,means suffering and pain.
