水引の由来は３つあります。

There are three origins of Mizuhiki.

1. 遣隋使から由来しているという説

遣隋使として小野妹子が隋から帰還したときに、同行した答礼使が持参した貢物に紅白の麻紐が結ばれたていました。その後、習慣として、紅白の麻紐を宮廷への献上品には結ぶということになりました。そして月日は流れ、室町時代には麻紐から紙縒りを糊水で引いて固めた水引紐になったと伝えられています。

1. Mizuhiki was derived from Envoy Sui

 When Imoko Ono (小野妹子) returned from Zui(隋, China) as an envoy, red and white hemp strings were tied to the tribute brought by the accompanying envoy from Zui. Then, tying the red and white hemp strings to dedicate goods for the court became a habit. It has been handed down that those strings became a Mizuhiki made by twisted the paper glued and hardened in the Muromachi period.(1338-1573)

2. 室町時代の日明（にちみん）貿易から由来しているという摂

室町時代の日明貿易の際、全ての輸入品の箱に紅白の縄が縛り付けてありました。この縄は、明側が輸出用の品を他の品を分かり易くするためのものであったのですが、日本側はこれを誤解して、贈答品には紅白の縄を付けると思いこみ、使われるようになりました。

2. Mizuhiki  came from the Nichiming(Japan-China) trade in the Muromachi period

During the Nichiming trade in the Muromachi period, red and white strings were tied on all of the imports. These strings ware used by the Ming(China) side to make it easier to distinguish exports from other. However, Japanese side misunderstood that red and white strings had to be used for the gifts and started to be used.

３．航海のお守りに由来しているという説

 航海の無事や海賊から守るための魔除けとして縄に塗った黒色毒が解く（ほどく）と変色して赤色になりました。

3. MIzuhiki was derived from an amulet for Voyage

Black poison painted on rope as an amulet to protect from pirates or wish a safe voyage was discolored to red.
